Mr. Jones is agitated and pacing the hallways, he is angry and won't let anyone help him. Ativan can be used for anxiety, agitation and restlessness.
The order for Mr. Jones reads: Ativan, Give 0.25ml SL Q8hrs as needed for anxiety
Can you give Mr. Jones a PRN Ativan?
YES and NO -
No, if the reason he needs the Ativan is because he is only agitated, you cannot give a PRN dose, because it's not listed as a reason to give it.
Call Hospice or FAX the provider to add "agitation" as a reason to give the Ativan.
YES - Explain
Mr. Jones is asking for Tylenol because he just fell and his back has been hurting really bad. You call the doctor and they are working on getting him an order for Tylenol and is sending it over in a minute. Can you give Mr. Jones Tylenol?
NO!! Just because the doctor is working on the order, that does not mean we already have an order for him. We need to wait for the order to be received and be entered into Yardi. YOU NEVER ADMINISTER MEDICATIONS WITHOUT AN ORDER
