What is a physical adaptation?

Any characteristic of an organism's body that helps them survive and reproduce in their environment.

100

What is the difference between physical and behavioral adaptations?

Behavioral adaptations change an organism's behavior and actions. Physical adaptations change how an organism's body looks and works.

100

What is an Endangered Species?

A species at risk of becoming extinct.

100

Name at-least 2 characteristics unique to birds.

1.Feathers

2. Beaks

3. Feathered wings

4. Hollow bones

5. Scaly feet

A liger is a combination of what two species?

A lion and a tiger

200

Why are physical adaptations important for animals?

These characteristics make the organism specifically suited to its niche.

200

Name one behavioral adaptation in black bears.

Hibernation; Cubs climbing trees next to mothers; Cubs licking mother's mouths.

200

What is the #1 cause of endangered species?

Habitat Loss.

200

Why do birds have different beaks?

They're adapted for eating different kinds of foods.

200

What is the scientific definition of a species?

A group of organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring.

300

Some examples of physical adaptations are…

- Long Necks

- Sharp Talons

- Sharp Teeth

- Webbed Feet

- Quills or Spikes

- any other PHYSICAL BODY PART that helps a creature survive and reproduce

300

What is an example of behavioral mimicry?

Ducklings swimming behind mother, Lion cubs play fighting, etc.

300

Name one real-world example of habitat loss.

Deforestation in the Amazon, Wildfires in Australia/California etc., Melting of glaciers...

300

What are owl pellets and how are they helpful for scientists?

Owl Pellets are the remains of an owl's prey that they cannot digest, regurgitated in the form of a pellet. Examining owl pellets allow scientists to better understand an owls diet and health.

300

Name 3 things that determine whether or not two animals are the same or different species.

Matching mating calls

Matching mating dances

Matching reproduction seasons

Same habitat

When they are awake (Nocturnal/Diurnal/Crepuscular)

400

How does camouflage help a species to survive?

- Helps prey to hide from predators

- Helps predators to sneak up on their prey

400

If an insect is shaped like a leaf, is that a behavioral adaptation?

No, it's a physical adaptation/mimicry.

400

List two ways to protect endangered species?

Reduce pollution; Restore habitats; Introduce protective laws; Remove invasive species.

400

What were the three of the five main owl adaptations that we covered?

1. Large and strong tubular eyes

2. Flexible necks (270 degree neck rotation)

3. Talons and hooked beak

4. Asymmetrical ears for accurate hearing

5. Silent flight

400

Name 2 things that determine whether or not two plants are the same or different species?

They use either the same thing to reproduce (either seeds or pollen)

Their seeds/pollen spread in the same way

500

What physical adaptations on skulls shows that an animal is a predator?

- Sharp teeth for carnivorous diets

- Front facing eye sockets

500

What is the purpose of seasonal migration?

Escaping cold weather to continue healthy breeding and feeding

500

Name an endangered species that lives or spends time in New York State.

Winter Skate, Eastern Small Footed Myotis Bat, Kemp's Ridley Sea Turtle, Bog Turtle, Box Turtle, Short Nose Sturgeon.

500

Name 2 different niches that birds/owls do in ecosystems.

1. Seed Dispersal

2. Predation/Pest Control

3. Pollination

4. Scavengers

5. Ecosystem Engineers

If one animal is nocturnal and the other animal is diurnal, can they be the same species? *Give definition of diurnal in answer

No they cannot! They are not awake at the same time. Nocturnal means the animal is awake at night and asleep during the day. Diurnal means the opposite! Like humans, the animal sleeps at night and is awake during the day.
