More people moved out west for a new opportunity and free land. The amount of buffalo that are killed increased, Native Americans were pushed off their land, and the culture of the Native American tribes was impacted.

The Dawes Act authorized the federal government to break up tribal lands by partitioning them into individual plots. The Native Americans who accepted were allowed to become US citizens but only them.

This was so contentious because Northerners and Republicans wanted to open the land to settlement by individual farmers, while Southern Democrats sought to make the land available to only slaveholders.

White settlers justified assimilation because they viewed their native traditions as barbaric and intolerable and believed that assimilation into white American society was the only acceptable fate for Native Americans. Christians argued saying that if the Native Americans accept Christianity they could be “saved” from the fires of hell.
