Kitchen calamity
Emergency protocol
100

You knick yourself while cutting fruit for your snack.

For a minor cut, rinse/clean the area with water, pat dry with a clean cloth and apply a bandage.

100

The power goes out and it is dark throughout the house.

Move slowly (no running) to find flashlights and/or candles/lighters.  Be sure to place any lit candles on flat surfaces and away from flammable items (e.g., curtains, paper...)

200

A jar of food/snack/jam is closed too tightly and won't open.

Try using a towel or another fabric to get a better grip on the cap.  You can also try lightly tapping the jar lid against something gently to loosen it up.  You do not want to exert enough pressure to break the jar.

200

A delivery person comes to the door with something for your parents.

Let parents answer the door if home.  If parents are not home, leave the door unanswered and wait for the delivery person to leave, even if the knocking is persistent.  In the latter case, remove yourself from the view of the door, and if person persists in knocking, call to alert an emergency contact.

300

Juice spills on the kitchen counter and runs down the drawers to the floor.

Clean up with a wet paper towel (or real towel, depending on how much).  Start from the counter and move downward (vs. cleaning the floor and then using the same towel on the kitchen countertop).

300

Someone starts choking on a piece of food.

Ask person if they are okay.  If they can't speak, breathe or cough (i.e., airway blocked), call an adult/911 and use abdominal thrusts learned.

400

A pan of food is creating lots of smoke in the kitchen!

Use a towel, open a nearby door, and/or if the room has a fan, turn it on to help the smoke dissipate.  Try not to breathe in too much smoke in the process, and if the whole room is smoky, try to get smoke away from the smoke alarm first (so it doesn't go off).

400

A parent/teacher is unresponsive.

Call 911 (using laptop or parent/teacher's phone) and report the incident giving address and key details (what appears to be wrong with the person and for how long).  Follow instructions of operator and potentially use CPR.
