They are named after an alumnus of Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) who died in World War I, following a university-wide naming convention for the dormitories. The building was originally constructed to house soldiers in the ASTP program, and after the war, the university chose to name the residence halls after alumni who had made the ultimate sacrifice.
