A promoter is a small region of DNA is a gene that is responsible for telling the RNA polymerase (protein) where to bind so it can copy the gene into a strand of mRNA

What was the analogy used for promoters?
A promoter is like a car that’s on but not moving yet. It requires an enhancer (the gas pedal) to go or a silencer (the brake) to stop. But enhancers and silencers require something to be used. Regulatory proteins are like your foot stepping on the gas (enhancer) or brake pedals (silencer) so they can be used.
What can affect gene expression in hormone activated traits.
Gene expression can be affected by the hormones that a male of female produces, binding to strands of DNA and activating certain genes.
