What challenge did I face when moving to France as a child?

My family was raised by an English minister, but we moved to a French Catholic neighborhood.

I strongly felt that the use of what were later termed as manipulatives needed to be used by children to explore their mathematical thinking in a more hands-on manner.

How did George affect my economic status before and after our marriage?

Before we were married, George helped me financially after my father passed away from money he had earned from running his own schools.  After George passed away, I faced financial difficulty due to him not leaving me any family resources or retirement funds for our five children.

How did the traditions of the time period affect my role as a teacher?

Women at the time were not allowed to teach in a college, so I unofficially taught students while I was a librarian.

Three of my most famous publications are Logic Taught by Love from 1889, The Preparation of the Child for Science from 1904, and Philosophy and Fun of Algebra from 1909.

I believed in the theory of mathematical imagination and using reasoning combined with unconscious thinking.

What job did I take after George died?

I started working as a librarian at Queens College in London, which was the first women's college in England.

How did I build on the mathematics of others during my time?

I was greatly influenced by my husband's mathematical work.  I helped convey some of his ideas by publishing them after he had passed, connecting some of his mathematical concepts to my own physiological ideas.

How did this culture of the time impact my study of mathematics?

I started teaching myself mathematics at a young age when I learned that I would not be allowed to attend a university, or even study mathematics, as a girl.
