The Verse of Mubahalah appears in the Qur’an in Surah Aal-Imran (3:61):

This verse was revealed in connection with a delegation of Christian scholars from Najran who came to Medina to debate the nature of Prophet Isa (Jesus), especially regarding his divinity.

When they refused to accept the Prophet’s explanations, Allah instructed him to perform Mubahalah—a solemn mutual prayer asking Allah to curse the side that is lying.

Instead, he brought only four individuals, the most spiritually pure members of his household.

He walked out carrying Imam Hasan on one side and Imam Husayn on the other.
Behind him came: Ali ibn Abi Talib (as) and Fatima al-Zahra (sa)

Seeing these five pure individuals, they said: “If he prays to God with these people, we fear the mountain will collapse upon us.” Out of fear that divine punishment would fall on them if they lied, they backed out, choosing instead to negotiate a peaceful agreement.
