Speech Question: What was the underground railroad? Why was it important? Why was it difficult for people to escape slavery?
The underground railroad was a group of places, "stations" that people could move along when escaping the south and going north. It was important because it saved a great many people from slavery. It was difficult to escape because almost everybody in the south believed that slavery was right and good. If they saw a slave escaping they would send the slave back to his/her master.

Speech Question: Kayla says people sometimes call the Inuit "Eskimos" and that the Inuit don't like that name. Do you think this is important? Why? Why do you think she feels this way?
Possible Answer. There are words called "exonyms" and "endonyms" and what this means is what other nations call people and what the people of that nation call themselves. For example, people who are not from Korea call Koreans Korean, but Korean people call themselves "hangookin." I think this is just the way of the world so it is not important that Kayla feels different about it. But I think she feels that way because she wants to choose her own identity and doesn't like the idea of other people choosing a name for her.
