Queen Persephone (pronounced "Pur-sef-o-nee") was trapped in the Underworld after she ate the cursed fruit from her husband's pomegranate tree. Because she ate 6 seeds, she had to stay in the Underworld for 6 months, which lead to crops and flowers wilting and dying (aka, winter time). Believers and followers of the myth sometimes smash a pomegranate over the doorway on the New Year to pray for her return again, and the end of the cold Winter.

The Gävle goat, in celebration of Yule, is built out of straw every year. However, due to the flammable nature of straw, almost every year the goat has been (accidentally or on purpose) burnt down! Nowadays, it becomes a tradition to see if the Swedish law enforcement and government can keep citizens from burning the goat to the ground.
