I was considered the most influential dancer in the history of film. I was also a choreographer and TV presenter.
I started my career as a child with my sister Adele doing performing a brother and sister act. We moved to New York and by the 1920s, my sister and I had gained popular acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. Adele and I parted professionally in 1932 when she got married.
I went to Hollywood for a screen test that was very disappointing; the report said: “Can’t act. Can’t sing. Slightly bald. Can dance a little”. Still, I seemed to have charmed the right people and I was granted a contract with RKO Radio Pictures.
I was paired with Ginger Rogers and we made nine films together including Top Hat, Swing Time, Follow the Fleet, and Shall We Dance.

I was an actor, director and producer, famous for my avant-garde work in theatre, film and radio. I had a turbulent childhood; I lost my mother when I was 9 years old and went to live with my father who was an alcoholic.
My first stage experience was in 1931 while visiting Ireland where I gave an audition claiming I was a Broadway star. I also wrote and acted in radio plays. My adaptation of the novel by H. G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds caused widespread panic in the streets of Los Angeles when listeners thought that Earth was being invaded by extraterrestrials. It brought me instant fame and success.
My first feature film – Citizen Kane - in 1941 is consistently ranked among the greatest films ever made. I married three times, once with Rita Hayworth.

I was an English actor and director born in Surrey. My father was a clergyman and although we were not close, I learned a great deal from him. He knew "when to drop the voice, when to bellow about the perils of hellfire, when to slip in a gag, when suddenly to wax sentimental …”
I studied dramatic art and my first roles were on stage. In 1938 I went to Hollywood to play Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights.
Returning to London I worked with A. Hitchcock in Rebecca followed by Pride & Prejudice, and The Entertainer.
I married twice, once to Vivian Leigh.
