While Mr. Tushman
was explaining to Julian’s parents about the bullying, the mother seemed to not really care. In fact she seemed to encourage the bullying by helping Julian photoshop Auggie out of the picture. She felt that everyone should be able to deal with hurt feelings, thus giving the impression that she doesn’t believe it’s a form of bullying. Based on how the mother seems to have little empathy towards others, it is likely this attitude has been brushed off by her son.

Why do you think Auggie always wanted to wear his helmet in public and also sometimes inside the house?
Auggie is very self-conscious of how he looks, and if he is able to avoid the stares, then will always wear his helmet in public. In addition to this, the self-conscious feeling in Auggie may have been brought about by his parents assuming he would have been bothered by stares, so bought him the helmet as protection in anticipation.
There is the possibility Auggie wears his helmet inside the house just so his parents can’t see he’s upset.
