His biggest mistake is saying something cruel about his friend behind his back. He learns that words can hurt deeply, even if you didn't mean them. He also learns that real friendship means standing up for someone, not just being nice when it's easy.
What does Jack care about more: being popular or being honest? How do you know?
He cares more about honesty. We know this because he punches Julian and loses popularity. He could stay popular by laughing at August, but he chooses to defend August instead.
