A woodworking technique where a hole in one piece of wood is designed to receive a projection or tongue from another piece. It creates a strong, interlocking joint at a 90-degree angle.

What is MORTISE & TENON?

Examples: some sofa frames, Afton Chairs, Coles glass door frame

100

This is a premium hardwood. Furniture made from it is more expensive than other wood types due to its smaller growth region, slower growth rate, and popularity in furniture and cabinetry.

What is WALNUT?

Did you know Walnut wood does not contain sap or resin, which are common allergens?

100

This knot is typically darker than the surrounding wood.

It is created where a branch extended from the tree trunk.

What is a PIN KNOT?

100

Do not use cleaning products containing ammonia, alcohol or petroleum.

Avoid THIS as it can accumulate over time and leave a residue.

What is FURNITURE POLISH?

100

The top-coat finish on our wood pieces help to protect the product from stains, scratches, and moisture damage.

Our vendors use four different types of top-coat finishes.

Name 3 of the 4.

What are

  • nitrocellulose lacquer? (Even chair, Parks table, Emerson)

  • catalyzed/conversion lacquer? (Adams, Adrian, Anton, Kenwood, Ventura)

  • water-based lacquer? (Berkeley, Copenhagen, Dahl, Grham, Linear, Rollins)

  • oil & wax? (Gorve Linear)

This is a joint made by cutting each of two parts to be joined, across the main surface, usually at a 45° angle, to form a corner, usually to form a 90° angle, though it can comprise any angle greater than 0 degrees.

Examples: Hudson cabinet boxes and glass door frames, Copenhagen cabinet boxes.

What is a MITER JOINT?

200

This wood has a pronounced grain pattern, adding visual interest to furniture pieces, and can be stained to various colors and finishes.

What is ASH WOOD?

Did you know? The Emerald Ash Boar pest is decimating ash tree populations, making it increasingly difficult to source sustainable ash wood

200

Sapwood is the younger, lighter, and softer outer wood that transports water and nutrients.

This is the older, darker, and stronger inner wood of a tree.

What is HEARTWOOD?

200

For this type of finish, treat your furniture annually, or more often, if the wood seems dry.

What is Oil-and-Wax or Oiled?

We recommend Howard Products Feed-N-Wax Wood Polish or Osmo Wood Wax Finish

200

Some of our products are stained prior to a protective top-coat being applied.

These stains include our Salt, Rye, Charcoal and one more. Name the stain.

What is SHELL?

300

Sometimes called a finger joint, this is a type of woodworking joinery that uses interlocking rectangular fingers to create a strong, right-angled connection between two pieces of wood.

What is a BOX JOINT?

300

This wood's light color can show scratches and dents, and its tight grain can make stain uneven or blotchy.

It starts light and bright but evolves to a dark honey color.

What is MAPLE?

Did you know? Maple is considered a more sustainable option due to its faster growth rate and adaptability.

300

Most common in ash, meandering lines resemble the shape of a worm imbedded in the wood.

What is GLASSWORM?

The effect is not actually caused by worms.

300

Moisture and heat can damage any wood finish. Protect your furniture by using some of these.

What are coasters, placemats, or trivets?

300

Fewer hazardous chemicals are used and released in the application process of this finish.

It requires specialized equipment and environment.

What is Water-Based Topcoat? Some examples are:

  • Berkeley

  • Copenhagen

  • Dahl

  • Graham

  • Linear

  • Rollins

400

A flaring tenon and a mortise into which it fits tightly making an interlocking joint between two pieces of wood. They are commonly used for drawer construction.
