Wood Species
This species of wood is a light colored softwood, has many knots and is often used for construction.
What is pine?
We use this machine to crosscut boards and preform miter cuts.
What is the miter saw?
We use this machine to preform crosscuts, and is the only machine in the shop that clamps the board down for us with presses.
What is the upcut saw?

This wood species has a rich dark color (we have used it), is hard and has a tight grain.

This machine is most often used rip boards down to final width.

Wood processes this way is cut in quarters, then boards and cut diagonally from these sections. It is sawn this way.

This type of tree looses their leaves in the winter.

This machine is used to get boards down to final thickness, say we need a board to go from 1'' thick to 0.75'' thick.

We have used this machine (hooked up to a computer) to add words and decorative images to our work.

Essentially a dead branch that has become embedded in newly produced wood.
What is a knot?
This is the most wasteful type of wood processing. Boards are cut to have the best grain, and ends up with a lot of waste. It is sawn this way.
What is rift sawn?
This tree keeps its leaves/pines during the winter time.
What are softwoods?
This machine does a great job of cutting curves, grooves and relief cuts.
What is the band saw?
We use this machine to sand off corners and other parts of our board. It is not shaped like a circle.
What is the belt sander?
A distortion in which the two ends do not lie on the same plane.
