Is Special VFR an IFR or VFR clearance?
IFR Clearance but flown VFR
Of the additional required voice reports, which are for a non-radar environment?
ETA change > 2 min (3 min in the North Atlantic), FAF INbound, Outer Marker Inbound
What are the differences between blue, green, and brown airports on the IFR low chart?
Blues are airports with HI+maybe LO approaches, Greens are LO approaches only, Browns have no approaches.
Can we land at a closed airfiled?
yes, if we have an emergency only
Is an LPV a precision or non-pecision approach?
Both, It is precision if the DH is below 300'
What is the definition of the runway environment?
Threshold, threshold markings, threshold lights, touchdown zone, touchdown zone markings, touchdown zone lights, runway, runway markings, runway lights, runway end identifier lights, visual glideslope indicator, approach lighting system (if applicable)
Class B requirements to enter
ATC clearance
private pilot certificate (or student certificate with requirements)
Mode C veil within 30nm, surface to 10,000’MSL, must be equipped with operable radar beacon transponder with automatic altitude reporting capability and operable ADS-B Out equipment
What are the required items for instrument flight (per CNAF and NATOPS)?
1. The pitot heater and all vacuum pressure or electrical sources for the pilot flight instruments must operate satisfactorily.
2. The aircraft shall be equipped with the following instruments in proper operating condition:
a. Airspeed indicator.
b. Altimeter.
c. Turn-and-slip indicator.
d. A clock displaying hours, minutes, and seconds with a sweep-second pointer or digital readout.
e. Attitude indicator.
f. Magnetic compass with current calibration card.
g. Heading indicator or gyrostabilized magnetic compass.
h. Vertical speed indicator.
3. Aircraft shall be equipped with deicing or icing control equipment for sustained or continuous flight in
known or forecast icing conditions.
4. Navigation lights must operate satisfactorily.
Helipilot (AFCS): SAS 1, SAS2, and ATTD HOLD operational and ON,
Electrical: Primary DC Gen, Aux DC Gen, and Battery all operational,
Hydraulics: System #1 and #2 both operational and ON.
What is required obstacle clearance when conducting these diverse departure assessments?
35 feet above DER, 400ft above DER prior to turn, 200fpm climb gradient.
If you are flying VFR on an IFR flight plan with an instructor how do you long the instrument time?
Both simulated time a approach is only logged for whoever was manipulating the controles
What defines the "local Area" per the RWOP?
No more than 350 NM but bound by geographical figures (gulf, mountains)
What are your responsibilities when signing as PIC (8 things)?
1.Weight & Balance has been filed,
2.Authorized flight,
3.Required Weather Briefing,
4.Safe and Orderly Conduct of Flight,
5.Instrument Rating if IMC (PIC),
6.Minimum fuel and weather
7.Planning data for the flight (including NOTAMs),
8.Passengers have been properly briefed and manifested
What are the 2 reasons you are allowed to go into a weather watch?
Storm development has not progressed as forecast. VFR filing is permitted, weather permitting. IFR flight may be permitted if aircraft radar is installed and operated, and VMC can be maintained. Also, if performance characteristics of the aircraft permit an en route flight altitude above existing or developing storms (not that relevant for helos).
What are your takeoff mins if you have precision approaches available at your takeoff airfield? How about non-precision approaches?
Precision = Published mins but NLT 200-½ for the runway in-use. Non-Precision = Published mins but NLT 300-1, not necessarily for the runway in-use (circling, copter, etc).
What are the 6 sections of the FIH?
Emergency Procedures, National/Int’l Flight Data and Procedures, Meteorological Information, Conversion Tables and Frequency Pairing, Standard Time Signals, FLIP and NOTAM Abbreviations/Code.
What are the 3 cases when you’re allowed to not use contract fuel?
Mission Requirements, it’s an Emergency, or it’s an Alternate.
Who can dictate that the storm development has not progressed as forecast?
DoD forecaster or FSS, with the final decision made by the Wing Commander.
