WHAT ARE GRENADES || In World War I, hand grenades were also known as “hand bombs.” The general philosophy for their use in the fighting armies was that grenades could kill the enemy underground or behind cover. They could also force the enemy into the open, providing targets for rifle and machine gun fire.

The weapon was invented in the 1800s, and early versions were used in the U.S. Civil War. But it wasn’t until World War I that the weapon came into its own, as mechanized slaughter took place on a scale scarcely imagined before.

WHAT IS A MACHINE GUN || Early machine guns were hand-powered, not automatic, but they provided a gateway for what was to dominate 20th-century battlegrounds. By World War I, machine guns were fully automatic weapons that fired bullets rapidly, up to 450 to 600 rounds a minute.

The "wireless"  quickly proved invaluable to wartime efforts. For instance, were able to warn soldiers of an attack of poisonous gas, giving them time to don their gas masks.

WHAT IS A RADIO || Radio made its debut years before World War I — it was often used by ships transmitting messages via Morse code, and in 1912, operators on the Titanic depended on radio to communicate with other ships and with onshore radio stations.

 It was used widely for treating soldiers during World War II, curing battlefield wound infections and pneumonia.

WHAT IS PENICILLIN || 

Its discovery didn't only help to cure people of numerous infections, but it also allowed doctors and surgeons to carry out more invasive treatments, which would not have been possible before because of the risk of deadly infections. During WW2, it saved the lives of almost one in seven UK soldiers wounded in battle.

WHAT ARE FOOD RATIONS || The government began rationing certain foods in May 1942, starting with sugar. Coffee was added to the list that November, followed by meats, fats, canned fish, cheese, and canned milk the following March.

 used trigonometry to help the submariners know when to fire their torpedoes at a moving target. These devices were expanded to surface ships to provide more accurate firing of the guns.

WHAT ARE COMPUTERS || 

Colossus was the world's first programmable electronic digital computer. British code breakers used Colossus for cryptanalysis during World War II. These messages were sent between the German High Command, and army field commanders. Reading these messages helped the Allies to win the war.
