This event was important because it was the key event that ended World War I. The Allies decided it was time to end this and they agreed they were going to make it happen. They won the Battle and Germany decided to end the war. Canadian troops joined with Britain and Australian troops, they were able to defeat Germany.

Explain The Schlieffen Plan and the Rape of Belgium. 

The goal of the Schlieffen plan was that the Germans wanted to arrive to the Western front before everyone else and to avoid a two-front war. They passed through Belgium in order to get to France. However, Belgium was neutral during the beggining of thewar, and the Germans did not respect that. They killed approximately 23,700 Belgians.

Explain the Zimmerman Note. 

It was sent by German foreign secretary Arthur Zimmerman to Mexico. It was intercepted and decoded by the British. It was later found by the U.S. Telegram stated Germany would again begin unrestricted submarine warfare. Even worse, telegram proposed alliance between Germany and Mexico. Germany promises to help Mexico get back land.

Trench Warfare was a type of fighting where both sides dig deep trenches in the ground as a defense against the enemy. Some conditions were dealing with lice, rats, the smell, trenchfoot.

  • Gave US postal officials the authority to prohibit the mailing of newspapers and magazines, (threatened individuals convicted of obstructing the draft (military recruitment with $10,000 fines and 20 years in jail.)

  • Purpose was to make it illegal to write or speak anything critical of American involvement in the war. 

  • Made it a federal offense to use “disloyal, profane, scurrilous (spreading rumors), or abusive language” about the Constitution, the government, the American uniform, or the US flag.
