LOVE

Living a life of rejection by those you love can drive people to behave in extreme ways.

1. Early in the book, Hindley was overlooked by his family as they grew stronger connections with Heathcliff. This caused Hindley to be resentful towards his entire family. This anger was increased after his wife died. Now, having no one to love, he turned to alcohol and became an angry, abusive man.

2. Even though Heathcliff and Catherine had a stronger connection, because of Catherine's ideas about class, she chose to marry Edgar instead of being with Heathcliff. This caused Heathcliff to feel rejected and to seek revenge. Heathcliff let his anger from rejected love control his entire life, which ultimately left him lonely and miserable.

What evidence supports the following theme messages?

If we live our lives seeking revenge, we will likely live a miserable and unfulfilling life.

Seeking revenge will ultimately leave us empty, lonely, and unfilled.

The key to happiness is love and forgiveness rather than revenge which will lead us down a dark path of resentment.

Because Heathcliff spent all his time focusing on revenge, it overtook his life. During this process, he lost the one person he truly cared about, driving everyone else to hate him. After he accomplished his goal of getting revenge, destroying the families, and gaining all their wealth, his life was left empty and meaningless. He was then haunted by the memory of Catherine, which slowly made him crazy and lose the desire to live.
