Describe why the tectonic plates move on the surface of the earth (Convection currents)
Convection currents happen inside the mantle, causing the liquid inside the mantle to move. As the core of the earth is hot, this causes the liquid mantle above to rise. As the liquid rises, it cools, which then causes it to solidify into rock. The rock is heavier, so then sinks again. This circular movement inside the mantle causes the tectonic plates on the surface of the earth to move in different directions.
