Explain a 'red herring' and identify the text we studied this year (author and title) that made use of this technique. Why do authors do this?
A red herring is used by an author in short stories and novels to convince the audience something else is going to happen, rather than the facts. It intentionally misleads the reader. 'Pig Boy', by J. C. Burke. The use of a red herring intrigues the reader and gives the story excitement and meaning.

High modality words are words used by an author that have a strong convcing sense behind them. Such as 'absolutely, undoubtedly' etc. Low modality words are not so certain. They include 'may', 'might', 'could be', etc.
