1. One powerful image in the poem *My Mother's Words* by Valma Galuvao is “A light to guide the way.” This symbolizes the mother’s wisdom and advice, which helps the speaker make good decisions and stay strong in life. Just like a light shows someone where to go in the dark, the mother’s words help the speaker through difficult and important moments in life.
2. One strong image in the poem is “a cool tropical glass of THANK YOU.” This image represents appreciation and relief. It compares a simple thank you to a refreshing drink, showing how something small like gratitude can make a big difference to someone who is tired and emotionally drained. It emphasizes how undervalued the speaker feels, and how powerful a few kind words could be.

How does the poets language help us understand the theme?
In both poems, the poets use clear and emotional language to show the importance of words. In My Mother's Words, gentle and strong words are shown as loving and guiding. In A Simple Thank You Would Be Nice, the poet uses angry and sharp words to show how painful it feels to be unappreciated. The language in both poems helps us understand how words can either build someone up or tear them down.

Madame Loisel is selfish and also wanting more than what she could afford which caused her to suffer in the future.
Litia îs a young girl who migrated from Samoa to NZ and struggles to find her identify. She remembers the memories with her loved ones and cherish them after they passed.
We learned that these two characters made different choices which led to different outcomes. As Loisel chose to be greedy and lie she suffered in the future while Litia came to accept the reality that her loved ones never truly leaves and cherish their memories instead of holding on to pain.

In A Simple Thank You Would Be Nice, three figurative language used are:
1. Simile – “like a shredder” compares how words cut her self-esteem.
2. Metaphor – “You speak cold” shows unkind speech.
3. Personification – “Your eyes condemn” gives human actions to eyes.
These help show the pain and frustration of being unappreciated.
