What is the purpose of hyperbole?
To exaggerate, and therefore and put an argument in perspective. Can also be used to reinforce the importance of a point.

cliché
Describe the tone and its effect: Inflammatory.
The author is aiming to arouse anger or passion within the reader, and expects a passionate response.

Appeal to nostalgia
What is the purpose of an analogy?
An analogy aims to draw a direct comparison to illustrate a point, usually by taking one element that is known to the reader and comparing it to the point that they are making.
Correctly identify - what is a 'target audience', and what is a 'stakeholder'?
TA - A specific group or demographic that an argument is aimed at
Stakeholders - An individual or select group with a direct connection to the issue. Sometimes named by the author or clearly implied. "Skin in the game".

Pun
Describe the tone and its effect: Assertive.
The author maintains an aggressive confidence in their ideas. The reader is often left feeling comforted by how confident the writer is that they are correct.
Name the technique: "We've had to let her go" or "Unfortunately, she didn't make the cut". "They were a working class people".
Euphemism
What is the purpose of alliteration?
Alliteration is used to make a statement standout and be memorable. It is often used in headlines to gain attention.

Connotation
Describe the tone and its effect: Compassionate.
The author is demonstrating empathy for those who have been affected by the issue and leaves the reader feeling as if they have been understood as the writer has really considered how they have been impacted.
Name the technique: "I've never appreciated that. I've always thought differently. I've been a renegade my whole life".
Anaphora
What is the purpose of cliche?
Using common phrases helps readers to understand the point being made through their familiarity with the phrase. The simplicity of the statement adds to its persuasiveness.
