Explain how cardiac hypertrophy affects resting heart rate.

  • Chronic training → left ventricle wall thickens/chamber enlarges (cardiac hypertrophy)
  • Larger, stronger ventricle → more blood ejected per beat (↑ stroke volume)
  • Cardiac output = heart rate × stroke volume, and resting cardiac output demand stays roughly constant
  • To meet that same demand with a higher stroke volume, fewer beats per minute are needed. Therefore effect = resting heart rate decreases
