Solid

100

What is an atom?

The smallest unit of matter

100

A substance made up of different particles

Mixtures

100

Where a substance is broken down by a liquid

Solution

The tiny pieces that make up objects

Particles

200

Name the three states of matter.

Gas, Liquid, Solid

200

A type of mixture that appears to be made up of just one thing

Homogeneous

200

The substance doing the breaking down

Solvent

200

When a liquid changes state and becomes a gas

Evaporating

300

The particles vibrate in place

Solid

300

What happens to the particles of a substance when it changes from a solid to a liquid?

The particles gain energy, move faster, and begin to move past each other, breaking the fixed structure of a solid.

300

A type of mixture that appears to be made up of different things

Heterogeneous mixture

300

The substance being broken down

Solute

300

The particles that pass through the filter during filtration

Filtrate

400

The particles slide past each other

Liquids

What process would you use to get fresh water from salt water?

Distillation

Oil and water is a.....

Heterogeneous mixture

400

Which is usually more than in a solution?

Solute or Solvent?

Solvent

400

Using evaporation and condensation to separate liquids

Distillation

500

The particles have a lot of space in between them

Gas

500

How would you separate a mixture of sand, salt, and water?

  • Filtration can be used to separate the sand from the saltwater mixture. The sand will remain in the filter paper, while the saltwater passes through.
  • Evaporation can then be used to separate the salt from the water. By heating the saltwater, the water will evaporate, leaving the salt behind.
