Excerpt from the ancient Greek historian Herodotus about how the ancient Egyptians prepared their mummies. The goal of mummification is to preserve the body so it doesn’t decay over time. 

“First remove part of the brain through the nostrils with a metal hook, and inject certain chemicals into the rest. Then, make a cut in the abdomen with a sharp knife and take out all the organs, rinsing the belly with wine and spices… Then they put away the body for 70 days before washing it and wrapping it in bandages.”
