Indigenous poets are poets who are members of the First Nations peoples. They have a history extending beyond tens of thousands of years as the original custodians of the lands of Australia.

Colonialist poets arrived to Australia during the European invasion. They were convicts who were sent to Australia as punishment, businessmen who wanted to claim some of the land's resources, and explorers who wanted to leave their European lives behind them.
