Outer layer of the Earth

Crust

100
How do convergent plates move?
Towards each other
100

What is the difference between Lava and Magma?

Lava is Magma that has erupted from a volcano (On the surface).

100

At what plate boundaries do volcanoes form?

Convergent and Divergent

100

What is the Law of Conservation of Mass?

Mass cannot be created or destroyed. Therefore, Mass can only be moved or change shape/structure.

200

Thickest layer of the Earth

Mantle

200

How do divergent plates move?

Away from each other
200

Which waves reach the surface first after an Earthquake, P waves or S waves?

P (Primary) Waves as they are the fastest moving waves.

200

What plate boundary forms mountains?

Continent-continent convergent boundaries

200

What is the Atomic Symbol for Silver?

Ag

300

What occurs in the mantle that drives plate tectonics?

Convection Currents

300

What event(s) occur at transform plate boundaries?

Earthquakes

300

How is the Epicentre of an Earthquake related to the Focus?

The Epicentre is the point on the surface, directly above the Focus of the Earthquake.

300

At which plate boundary is the Earth's crust created?

Divergent plate boundaries

300

Explain the difference between an Acid and a Base?

Teacher discretion.

500

What layer of the Earth is broken into tectonic plates?

Crust and top of the mantle OR Lithosphere

500

Who proposed the theory of continental drift?

Alfred Wegener

Explain how Liquefaction occurs.

Liquefaction occurs when an earthquakes waves vibrate the ground, causing it to behave like a liquid, breaking bonds and driving water up from the soil below.

500

How do volcanoes occur at plate boundaries?

Movement at plate boundaries allow magma to rise up from the mantle to the crust, where it becomes lava and forms volcanoes as it cools and solidifies. At convergent plate boundaries, the oceanic plate subducts and melts due to heat and friction, creating magma which can then rise up to the surface.

500

What are 2 indicators that a Chemical Change has occurred in a reaction?

Any 2 of the following;

Colour change

Temperature change

Precipitate (solid) formed

Gas given off (bubbling)

Lucky Dip Question: WHO AM I?

I was born in 12th of October 1968, in NSW.

My first career was as a HPE Teacher in England.

When I returned to Australia, I starred in many theatre productions where my Acting career began, with some early television acting, notably in The Man From Snowy River.

I had my breakthrough into Film starring in X-Men as Wolverine. Later starring in such films as Les Miserables, Van Helsing and Australia.

I am .... Hugh Jackman

How did Hawaii Form?

The Hawaiian Islands were formed by volcanic activity. The Hawaiian Islands are an example of an island chain created by hot-spot volcanism. Each island in the chain is successively older toward the northwest because the plate is moving northwest over a magma plume.

Explain why Volcanoes at the site of a subduction boundary are usually more explosive.

Subduction boundaries have oceanic crust, which have higher water content, subducting into the mantle. This causes gas to build up under the continental crust as the crust melts. When Volcanoes on the site of the gas build up erupt, the greater pressure causes more explosive eruptions.

Explain how seafloor spreading occurs, and it's link to Earths crust recycling.

Seafloor spreading occurs at mid-ocean ridges, where divergent plates push the crust away from each other, creating new crust at the mid-ocean ridge. The Earth's crust gets recycled where divergent plates subduct under another plate, melting the crust into the mantle.
