What is a spread?
A visual look and verbal statement that ties together all parts of the yearbook.
What is the theme?
An action shot as opposed to a posed photo.
What is a candid?
Blank area where no elements are placed.
What is white space?
A bold or larger line of text at the top of a page that summarizes or introduces what it is about. It grabs the readers attention.
What is a headline?
The area of a yearbook connecting the front and back covers.
What is a spine?
A 16 page grouping made up of two 8-page flats.
What is a signature?
A posed photograph of a person, usually head and shoulders, typically taken by a professional photographer.
What is a portrait?
This is the invisible (or white space created) line that runs across the spread, either above or below the middle. It draws your eye to it.
What is an eyeline?
The first page of the yearbook that contains school name, address, city/state, publication name, and volume number.
What is the title page?
The area between two facing pages when the book is opened. It is important to keep faces and text out of this area.
What is the gutter?
A page-by-page diagram listing of your yearbook's contents.
What is the ladder?
A few sentences that identify the who, what, where, when, why and how of a picture.
What is a caption?
The photo that is 2 to 2.5 times larger than other photos on the spread.
What is the dominant photo?
The reference at the back of a yearbook where pages number are listed with names.
What is the index?
The heavier sheets of paper which hold the pages of yearbook to the cover.
What are the endsheets?
The date or time before which all pages of the yearbook must be done. This is the final publishing date, not the mailing date.
What is the final deadline?
The process of automatically adding and organizing portrait images to the pages of a yearbook.
What is portrait flowing?
A vertical unit of space used to align and divide a yearbook spread.
What is a column?
Indicates a new section and provides continuity with the theme.
What is the divider?
The page number and the topic of a spread placed as a unit, usually found at the bottom left and bottom right of the spread.
What is the folio?
A unit of measurement in yearbook. There are six of these in an inch.
What is a pica?
The process of marking photos with names of individuals who appear in the photos.
What is tagging?
When any image or element touches the edge of the page extending beyond the trim edge.
What is bleed?
The part of the book that contains publication information such as yearbook adviser, yearbook publisher, paper stock, ink color, typefaces (fonts), book price, staff members, and acknowledgements. Consider this the “how it was made” section of the yearbook and is usually found at the end.
