MYTH!
People can and DO recover from addition every day. Once treatment begins, someone with substance use disorder can manage their illness, just like any other chronic illness. With the right treatment, recovery is possible for everyone.

When does a persons frontal lobe usually finish developing...& why do we care?
Usually around the age of 25, the frontal lobe is responsible for decision making, so a young persons brain does not make decisions the same as someone in their mid-30's etc. (Fun fact! This is why young people usually have better memory)
How do depressants work?
They slow down the connections between the brain and the body. This is what causes people to slur while they are talking.
Other symptoms can be - dilated pupils, confusion, slow pulse, impaired judgment etc.
Sometimes also called downers.
What is critical thinking?
Really looking at the media that we are consuming and stopping to think, is this real, is this factual, has someone created this with AI, is this trying to sell me something. This could be fact checking news or as simple of trusting your gut.

Substance prescribed by a doctor to treat severe pain.
What is stereotyping and targeting?
Targeting - sending only certain media or advertisements to specific groups based off their characteristics like age, gender, location, languages.
Stereotyping - targeting taken to the extreme. Can quickly escalate to things like racism or classism etc.
What is value?
The best definition of 'value' is a quality or idea that is considered important. Value can refer to the worth or importance of something. For example, in literature, the value of a story may lie in its moral lesson or the themes it explores. In economics, value can be determined by supply and demand.

If someone knows what they value, they are able to decide whether a risk is worth taking.
People tend to act in ways that are consistent with their values.
What is fentanyl and carfentanil?
Fentanyl - a synthetic opioid pain reliever that can be prescribed for pain, but is also made illegally and sold on the streets. It is also used to mix with other substances to make the affects stronger, or last longer.
Carfentanil - currently considered the most dangerous opioid and is 100 times stronger than Fentanyl. The opioid is a mixture of Fentanyl and large animal tranquilizer.
What can we do to make sure that we use media in a way that protects our health?
Even though the media can influence us, we decide when, and how we are going to use it.
Media impacts our health whether we are aware, or not. That's why it's so important to be mindful of the media we consume.

Comes from the Latin word for "cut" When you make a decision, you separate what you will do from what you won't do.
How does substance use affect someone's ability to make a decision and assess risk?
Substance use can increase the level of risk and the probability of harm for activities that might otherwise be low risk.
Substance use can also change the speed the brain works and the effectiveness of how the brain works.
What is naloxone(Narcan)?
Naloxone (brand names such as Narcan and Kloxxado) is a fast-acting medication that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. It is an emergency treatment that is safe to use and can be administered by anyone with minimal training.
