A group of students wanted to test the effect of cross-sectional area on air resistance. They decided to do this by running a toy car with a piece of cardboard on the front of it down a ramp. They changed the area of the cardboard for each trial. They measured the distance from the bottom of the ramp to where the car stopped each trial. They knew that a bigger air resistance would mean that the car did not travel as far.

It was hypothesised that the greater the cross sectional area of the cardboard the shorter distance the car will travel. This is because the greater air resistance will slow the car down.
