No experience under 6th grade, helped 1 older student with AP literature class.

Comments are to the point, not too long, and not awkwardly short (do you keep waiting for them to say more, but they don't?). Ability to elaborate on thoughts if prompted, and stay focused if needed. Do you feel comfortable conversing with them? If not, a student won't either.
What are good communication skills?

"I would tell them the problem is division and they should set up the long division problem, then figure out how many 6s go into 5, then put that number on top, then subtract", etc…
What is an ineffective way to teach a division word problem to a 4th grader?

I’m more interested in some of these subjects than others, and we probably won’t get to them all. That way you can end early without it being too awkward.
What can you say to give yourself a quick out if it is not a good fit?

Has tutored ELA.

Applicants should be sitting up straight, in a neutral or professional location, professionally dressed and presentable. Hands off of face and head, not fidgeting, eye contact, smile on, focused on you. If they were acting this way in a client's home, would it be a good reflection of our company?
What is professional environment/body language!

"You have to find the common denominator, by multiplying the denominators together. Than do the same thing to the top, then add the denominators but not the numerators. So you get 11/12."
What is an ineffective way to teach 2/3 + 1/4?

All lines filled out, logical numbers entered, box checked at bottom.

“The only subjects I’m interested in are the ones that you have a solid understanding of. You don’t need to review, you’re ready to jump right in wherever a student is within a subject. Which subjects would you say don’t fit that criteria? What are your favorite subjects?”
How can you quickly eliminate many subjects?

Seems to have the most experience with math and science subjects, does he have specific knowledge of ELA teaching techniques?
What is a helpful “questions for ZIPI” note?
300
"These questions span a range of topics, and we don't expect you to have every fact in [subject] memorized. If you know the answer, great. If not, that's ok, we can move on to a different question. We take your responses to these questions into consideration with a host of other information, they are not used in isolation." (Usually their responses are in line with their abilities, however)
What do you say when someone criticizes our test questions?

"Lets get out some fraction pies/bars/cut some paper up/draw a picture of these two fractions. How do we do that? What do these numbers mean? How might you try to put them together? Did that work? Can you tell how much you have all together? Why not? What if we cut these pieces into smaller pieces so we could make them all the same size? Lets try that." etc. (Move from concrete to abstract). Nearly impossible to teach most math concepts without first relating to something concrete.
What is an effective way to teach 2/3 + 1/4 (or any math topic)?
300
No pending subjects, specific notes in all subjects, including why rejected.
When is a subject complete?
400
Ask what classes they’ve taken and when. Most people overestimate their abilities. Start high and go low. “Take a look at these questions. At a glance, do these look like questions you’d be able to answer off the top of your head?” No? Move down a level. Repeat.
How can you quickly narrow down subjects?

Seems like he has potential, screen further.
What is an unhelpful question for a ZIPI note?

Firmly but professionally reiterate that the tutoring rate is pre-determined for each city, it is unfortunately not negotiable (unless they are tutoring a high demand subject, like TP, and will walk away without a higher rate! Then offer them higher if possible. Never above contracted rate limit)
What to do if someone tries re-negotiate their rate again after the ps?

How does a good writing tutor scaffold the writing process?
A good writing tutor avoids telling the author what to write, or inserting their own ideas. They help students develop their own opinions and ideas (teach a man to fish, vs. giving a man a fish). Give students one thing to focus on at a time, the whole writing process is very overwhelming. Go beyond the standard "intro paragraph, thesis, 5 paragraphs, conclusion" response. Show model examples, teach them what good writing looks like, and how to identify things in their own writing, rather than marking it all up and correcting for them. Can they differentiate instruction for different levels? High school freshman looks different than college student.

Short and sweet, bullet lists, so directors can quickly read and make a judgement about placement.
What are favorite subjects, star ratings and overall notes, and why are they important?
500
What manipulatives/tools do you like to/have you use(d) to teach math concepts to younger students?
Snap cubes, pennies, counting bears, fraction pies, ten frames, longs, flats, 100s charts, toothpicks, cubes, papers, scissors, etc. If they don’t know what you’re talking about, or are vague, they probably can’t teach math to MS or younger.
500
Why do subject notes need to be detailed and subject specific?
The more specific and detailed the notes are, the better chance directors have of making good matches.
500
What would you say to someone that is just plain rude/unprofessional?
Keep it professional and calm no matter what. It is ok to politely end a conversation when needed (ie: thank you, we have discussed everything I wanted to get to today, etc). Anyone can leave a review on us, even if they're not hired, we don't want to give them any reason to say anything negative. Amanda has an example for you...
500
What would you do if an applicant is very long winded, taking too long to answer a question?
Politely interrupt when they stop for a breath and remind them that you have limited time and a lot to cover, would it be okay to move on to another topic? (then make a mental note on how a student would feel sitting in front of this person for an hour or more...)
500

What is a tool can you use to make sure everything is complete before moving an applicant to docs complete?
