Basic human traits that have been distorted out of proportion by our self-centeredness, causing enormous pain to us and to those around us.  Those thoughts, words, or actions we do while knowing they are wrong.

The act of trying to explain, or justify behavior or attitudes with logical reasons even though they are inappropriate.

What is rationalization?

This step refers to "acting as if" when we still have doubts when approaching it; keeping in mind that coming to believe is a process.

This tradition reflects the group's sense of responsibility for itself.  It helps our groups avoid the heated conflicts that arise over the control of resources.

What is the 7th Tradition?

Freedom from pride or arrogance. Some common actions of those  practicing this principle are:  listening to others, gratitude, asking for help when we need it, and reviewing our actions against the language of pride.

An act that is done without any expectation of result or reward/award for the person doing it.

This step asks that we move away from intellectualizing the recovery process and instead to increase our trust in a power greater than ourselves.

This tradition tells us that when we speak to the public about NA we do not make exaggerated claims about the program.  Rather, we are to speak simply and directly about what NA is and what we do.  "If you want what we have to offer, this is what we are and how we work.  If we can be of service, please let us know."

A characteristic that involves being receptive to a wide variety of ideas.  It includes the ability to consider other perspectives and trying to be empathetic to other people, even when we disagree with them.

What is open-mindedness?

What is arrogance?

The reparation of damage we have done or do particularly by changing the behavior.  Not an "I'm sorry."

This step provides us the initial insight we need to grow.  It helps us to identify those patterns, behaviors or beliefs that show us the exact nature of our wrongs.

This tradition in part prevents an authoritarian hierarchy within the fellowship and reminds us that each of us adds to the dimension and color of to the message of our fellowship.  It summarizes previous traditions.

The ability to remain calm even after waiting for or dealing with something painstakingly slow.

This step asks us to draw on the courage we acquired in a previous step and share our innermost feelings and guarded secrets.

The capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference.  In short, the ability to place oneself in another person's shoes.
