Computerized axial tomography, also known as the CAT scan, was developed in 1971. In its importance, the development of the CAT scan ranks with Roentgen's discovery of X-Rays. The word "tomography" comes from the Greek word "tomos" meaning section or slice. In effect, the CAT scan allowed doctors to see into the body almost as if layers of it had been sliced away for better viewing. For the first time, it was possible to view soft tissue inside the skull, chest and abdomen without resorting to surgery. Thanks to the CAT scan, radiologists could now distinguish normal from clotted blood. They could also examine the ventricles of the heart without inflicting pain. Prior to the creation of the CAT scan, it had been necessary to pump air into the ventricles of the heart, causing the person undergoing the procedure intense pain.

Main Idea:

a. Cat scans can show the ventricles of the heart.

b. The invention of the CAT scan was as an important discovery as the development of X-Rays.

c. Due to invention of the CAT scan, radiologists could now distinguish normal from clotted blood.

Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory Disease (AERD), also known as Samter's Triad or Aspirin Sensitive Asthma (ASA), is a chronic medical condition that consists of asthma, recurrent sinus disease with nasal polyps, and a sensitivity to aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Approximately 10% of all adults with asthma and 40% of patients with asthma and nasal polyps are sensitive to aspirin and NSAIDs. Patients with AERD often do not respond to conventional treatments. Many have experienced chronic sinus infections and can lose their sense of smell. The characteristic feature of AERD is that patients develop reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs.

A. Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory Disease (AERD) is the primary cause of Samter’s Triad and Aspirin Sensitive Asthma (ASA).

B. AERD which consists of asthma, sinus disease, and sensitivity to aspirin and NSAIDS causes patients to suffer from sensitivity issues.

C. 10% of adults with asthma, plus 40% patients with asthma and nasal polyps have AERD.

D. Patients with AERD or Aspirin Sensitive Asthma (ASA) develop reactions to Samter's Triad which leads to loss of smell.
