What is a stop sign?
What are types of parking?
These areas are not viewable by your mirrors. You must shoulder check to make sure there are no vehicles in these areas.
What are blind spots?
These are factors that can impact your ability to drive safely.
What are drugs (prescription or illegal), alcohol, distractions, and/or lack of sleep?
This takes about 3/4 of a second.
What is response/perception time?
You must yield the right-of-way to traffic not facing the sign and to all pedestrians waiting to cross and within the crosswalk or intersection.
What is a yield sign?
On a sidewalk or boulevard
On a crosswalk or on any part of a crosswalk
Within an intersection
Within one and a half metres (five feet) of access to a garage, private roadway, or driveway
Alongside or opposite any street construction or obstruction
When stopping or parking would obstruct traffic
On a bridge or underpass or the approaches to a bridge or underpass
Where a traffic control device prohibits stopping or parking
Within five metres (16 feet) of a stop sign or yield sign
Within five metres of the nearest side of a marked crosswalk
Within five metres of a fire hydrant. When the hydrant is not located at the curb, do not park within five metres of the point on the curb nearest the hydrant.
Within five metres (16 feet) of a fire hydrant.
Beside other vehicles where you may be double-parked
Closer than five metres of the edge of the intersecting roadway, except where there is an indication that parking is permitted, such as with a parking meter
At or near the site of a fire, explosion, motor vehicle crash, or other incident, where parking would obstruct traffic or emergency response
On a roadway outside an urban area, do not park:
- On the roadway, parking lane, or shoulder of a primary highway except where:
- Your vehicle is incapable of moving under its own power,
- An emergency arises, or
- It is permitted by law.
- Unless there is a clear passage for other motor vehicles, and
- Your vehicle can be seen for 60 metres (200 feet) along the roadway in both directions.
What are places where you cannot park?
You cannot do this when:
Oncoming vehicles are too close.
A solid yellow line is on your side of the centre line
A sign indicates you cannot do so.
You are in a school or playground zone during school or playground zone times
Another vehicle is stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross at a marked or unmarked crosswalk
A school bus has flashing red lights and the stop arm extended indicating the school bus has stopped.
What is pass?
You must yield right of way to these vehicles, by moving over to the nearest curb, and stop until these vehicles pass.
What are emergency vehicles with sirens on?
These lights should be be turned off when following behind a vehicle within 150m or when 300m of oncoming vehicles.
What are high beams/bright lights?
These signs are both near schools, but one includes a speed limit sign.
What are school zones and school areas?
Check the mirrors and watch for pedestrians, other vehicles, cyclists, or other options.
What must be done before leaving a parking spot?
You must yield the right-of-way to a vehicle on your right at these locations. These locations do not have any traffic signs or lights.
You must use caution and judgement at these locations.
What are uncontrolled intersections?
You must go 60km/hour or posted speed limit, which ever is lower, while passing these in the lane closest to them, or move over when safely able to do so.
What are emergency vehicles or two trucks?
This is combined by distance travelled while perceiving a need to stop, distance travelled while reacting, and distance travelled after brakes are applied.
What is stopping distance?
These two types of signs are both typically white squares, with either a green circle, or a red circle with a line through it.
What are signs that show what is allowed or not allowed?
When parking here, you turn your front wheels to the right, set your park brake, put your vehicle in park (in an automatic transmission) or low gear (in a manual transmission).
These are not permitted:
At an intersection with a traffic control device unless permitted by traffic control device.
Where signs prohibit doing so.
In urban areas: on a roadway between intersections, an ally intersection, where a roadway is an access to a parking lot.
In rural areas: on a curve, on or near a hill where another vehicle cannot see you within 150 metres from either direction.
What are u-turns?
When this starts to happen, you should keep your foot off the brake, look and steer in the direction you want to go, point the tires along the centre of your lane, and make small corrections to your steering.
What is a skid?
These double when workers are present.
What are speed fines?
These signs are typically yellow and can inform drivers of upcoming things, such as traffic control devices, hazards, or features of the road.
What are warning signs?
1) Check behind your vehicle for traffic and slow down well in advance of the space using your brakes.
2) Stop when your rear bumper is in line with the rear bumper of the front vehicle. You should leave about 1M (3 feet) between your vehicle and the front vehicle.
3) Reverse slowly about 50CM (1.5 feet) and steer sharply to the right until your vehicle is at a 45 degree angle to the curb.
4) While still reversing, straighten front wheels until the right corner of your front bumper is in line with the front vehicle.
5) Turn the wheel sharply to the left and continue to reverse until your vehicle is parallel to the curb. Your right wheels must be 50CM (1.5 feet) or less from the curb.
What are the steps to parallel parking?
When doing this, you need to:
Accelerate to the speed of traffic on the main road.
Choose a gap in traffic and adjust speed if required.
Use your signal light.
Shoulder check.
Move over to the main road when safe to do so.
What is merging?
These are the "times" you should be looking ahead of your vehicle when driving in urban areas and rural areas.
What is 12 to 15 seconds in urban areas, and 20 to 25 seconds in rural areas?
