300

What was described as ironic during the presentation?

Irony: the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. (Google Definiton :D)

Merrick's hometown community witnessed his funeral and pretended to appreciate him but in truth, they were only mocking him and shaming his choices with smiles on their faces as if it was a typical conversation.

400
How did Jim Laird parallel with Harvey Merrick?

He and Harvey went to the same school and they were forced to go into a career path chosen by the "Misty Group". Laird became a lawyer as wanted, but Harvey went on his own path and became a sculptor.

What is the phrase that I mentioned in the presentation?

The Road Less Traveled By!

400

What is your interpretation of conformity/oppression vs. freedom from the passage?

Freedom was disliked and Harvey Merrick represented freedom by escaping and leaving his hometown that was filled with social conformity. His hometown lacked understanding towards art and they were only centered on profiting through industry. (greedy people)

The Coal and Lumber Dealer in Irony 1. You could also say Jim Laird but it's questionable because he was forced into that group and stayed in Sand Creek.

500

How does Willa Cather combine all of the rhetorical choices from "The Sculptor's Funeral" to form a perspective/assumption about Harvey Merrick and his character even if he is dead?

Uses compare and contrast to describe him alongside Jim Laird and the other men who were affected by the Misty Group.

Uses irony to display the unfortunate environment Harvey Merrick had to live in before he escaped his hometown to pursue his dreams.

Uses allusions to Mr. Reinhart as a foundation to develop Mr. Merrick's character and the overall story.

Uses metaphors to describe Mr. Merrick and how he was perceived by others who lacked understanding, and how he was perceived by those close to him like Mr. Steavens.

500

What is Mr. Normand's first name?

NEILL NORMAND GUYS YES.

500

What do you believe Mr. Steavens was thinking about when he thought of "...it was Merrick. Whatever he touched, he revealed its holiest secret; liberated it from enchantment and restored it to its pristine loveliness..."

Mr. Merrick was different from the perceptions of what other people thought about him. He was a light to everything he touched, as if he was like purifying things to their deepest soul.

Mr. Merrick is a sculptor who may have learned human anatomy and art, so he basically gives color and light to everything that is dull/once dull.
