(ch. 1–7)
Who made God?
Nobody made God.
Has God ever had a beginning?
No, God has always been.
Will God ever die?
No, God lives forever!
Are there more gods than one?
No, there is only one true God.
In how many persons does this one God exist?
God exists in three persons.
What was Hannah's problem?
Hannah was barren (could not have children), and Penninah made fun of Hannah because of this.
What sin of Israel is Samuel upset about in chapter 8?
Israel rejects God as king and wants a human king like the other nations to go before them in battle. They foolishly put their hope in a human king instead of God.
DISOBEDIENCE
People look at outward appearances, but God looks at...
the heart!
This was the name of the champion of the Philistines who challenged a man of Israel's choosing to a fight.
Goliath
How did Hannah thank God when He enabled her to have children?
Hannah praised God and dedicated her first child to Yahweh's service. He began living with Eli the priest from a young age.
Why does God give Saul to Israel as king? (What is it about Saul that makes Israel want him?)
Saul is chosen because he's tall and handsome, not because he's capable of being a good king.
Saul makes up a rule that forbade soldiers from doing this until Saul had avenged his enemies.
EATING.
Why does Samuel express fear of going out and finding a new king for Israel?
Samuel knows Saul is willing to kill him if he is caught.
Why the long wait? Why didn't David just kill the dude the moment he opened his mouth about being so macho?
David wasn't at the scene. He had been going back and forth between Saul and shepherding his flock.
How did Eli and his sons despise God's holiness?
Eli's sons took whatever meat they wanted from God's sacrifices and were immoral. Eli dishonored God by failing to stop his sons' sin.
What were some of the things Samuel told the people of Israel that a human king would do?
take their sons and make them his soldiers and workers
take their daughters and make them his daughters, cooks, and bakers
take their fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his servants
take a tenth of their seed and vineyards and give them to his officers and servants
take their servants and donkeys and use them for his work
take a tenth of their flocks and make the people his slaves
In what way did Saul misuse the worship of God like a magic trick?
Saul offered the sacrifice himself instead of waiting for Samuel. He showed that he trusted more in himself than in God.
Jesse is told to bring his sons before Samuel, but none of the sons he brings is fit to be king? Why?
Jesse left David out. David was out tending to the sheep.
In 1 Samuel 17:34–35, David has to explain to Saul that he's qualified to fight Goliath. What has David done in terms of being a warrior?
David had already fought and struck down lions and bears in the course of his work as a shepherd.
How did Eli's sons misuse the Ark of the Covenant?
They brought it into battle as if it works like a magic trick or good luck charm instead of putting their faith in God Himself. God did not allow Himself to be misused, caused Israel to be defeated in battle, and allowed the Philistines to capture the ark.
Benjamin!
What was Saul supposed to do with Amalek, and what actually happened instead?
Saul was supposed to strike down Amalek comprehensively. Instead they took some of the nice things to bring to the sacrifice.
By what instrument did Samuel anoint David?
With a horn of oil.
Who is God?
100 points for the short answer.
500 points for the long answer.
God is the only living and true God.
He's the all-glorious, almighty, all-knowing, sovereign Creator and Lord of the whole universe. God is perfect and holy, infinite, eternal, and unchanging.
The prayer that serves as the centerpiece of Jewish prayer services is called the Shema. It goes...
שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ יְהוָה אֶחָֽד
Tell me what this means or what chapter and verse this is.
Hear, O Israel, the LORD is our God; the LORD is One!
Deuteronomy 6:4
A major edition of the Greek New Testament was published in the year 1550. To score points, tell me:
* the name and author of the edition, or
* the edition's major innovation that is in your Bible today
* Textus Receptus, edited by Robertus Stephanus
* Verse numbers! (Chapter divisions came about in the 1200s.)
Who is the Redeemer of God's elect?
(the long one...obviously...)
The only Savior of men is the Lord Jesus Christ who being the eternal Son of God became man and so is both God and man in two natures and one person.
NAME THE CREED FROM WHICH THIS TEXT COMES:
And the catholic faith is this: that we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the Substance. For there is one Person of the Father; another of the Son; and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one; the Glory equal, the Majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is; such is the Son; and such is the Holy Ghost. The Father uncreated; the Son uncreated; and the Holy Ghost uncreated. The Father unlimited; the Son unlimited; and the Holy Ghost unlimited. The Father eternal; the Son eternal; and the Holy Ghost eternal. And yet they are not three eternals; but one eternal. As also there are not three uncreated; nor three infinites, but one uncreated; and one infinite. So likewise the Father is Almighty; the Son Almighty; and the Holy Ghost Almighty. And yet they are not three Almighties; but one Almighty. So the Father is God; the Son is God; and the Holy Ghost is God. And yet they are not three Gods; but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord; the Son Lord; and the Holy Ghost Lord. And yet not three Lords; but one Lord. For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity; to acknowledge every Person by himself to be God and Lord; So are we forbidden by the catholic religion; to say, There are three Gods, or three Lords.
