Is run-off a viral part of the water cycle
Yes
100
What is an aquifer?
It's a layer of rock that is porous and allows water to flow through.
100
What is weathering?
Weathering is the process of breaking down rock into smaller fragments.
100
what are the two main transporters of erosion?
Moving water and glaciers
100
What is deposition?
It is the process in which eroded sediments and other material are dropped or left by water or ice, creating built-up landforms such as deltas and eskers.
200
Name 3 things that affect the amout of run-off.
1) The nature of the ground material. 2) The amount of rain. 3) The length of time it rains. 4) The slope of the land. 5) The amount of vegetation. 6) The amount of development in the area.
200
What is a reservoir?
Reservoirs are large human-made or natural lakes that store water until people need it.
200
What are the three types of weathering?
Physical weathering, chemical weathering and biological weathering.
200
What are rapids?
Rapids are where the water moves very quickly over exposed pieces of rocks.
200
What are deltas?
An area of built-up sediment deposited by a river where the river empties into an ocean or a lake.
300
What is a drainage basin?
The area of land on which precipitation falls and works its way into a common river.
300
It's the water that makes its way into the spaces (pores) of rock.
What is Ground Water
300
In what climate does physical weathering occur most?
lots of moisture in air or rain and snow and when there are large temperature differences between summer and winter or between daytime and nighttime.
300
What is a landslide?
Its is a rapid movement of rock material down the slope of a hill or mountain.
300
What deposits the sediments?
Water and ice
400
What is a tributary?
Small branches of river that connects to smaller rivers and many streams.
400
How much of the world's fresh water today is trapped in glaciers?
Two thirds, 2/3
400
In what climate does chemical weathering occurs the most?
high temperatures, lots of rainfall and high levels of pollution in the air.
400
What are striations?
They are scratch marks cut into rock by glaciers slowly moving over it.
400
Why are many of the world's largest cities began as settlements on or near deltas?
Deltas make good locations for growing food and launching ships.
500
Whats another name for a drainage basin.
A watershed.
500
What is receding and what causes it?
Receding is when a glacier starts melting back up a slope. It happens when the glacier reaches an elevation where the temperature is warm enough to make the glacier melt faster than gravity can keep it creeping along.
500
Explain how chemical weathering occurs underground.
Humans breathe out carbon dioxide and it gets mixed with rain. The rain falls to the ground and into the ground water. Now the ground water is slightly acidic. When it touches rocks containing calcium carbonate, the water dissolves the rock.

Name 5 large features created by glaciers and describe them.
Arete: narrow ridge between two cirques. Cirque: bowl-shaped valley at the head of a glacier fiord: A narrow inlet of ocean between steep cliffs carved by glaciers Hanging valley: U-shaped valley cut off by a bigger valley created by a larger glacier horn: pyramid-shaped peak located between three cirques.

Name 4 glacier-deposited features and describe them.
Erratic: Large boulder deposited on the ground by glacier Esker: winding ridge of material deposited by a stream running under a glacier. Moraine: Ridge of rocky material deposited by a glacier. Outwash: Material deposited by water from melting glacier.
