Thick membrane that encases the heart, which contracts and relaxes to force blood to move through out the system.
Pericardium
sticky, salty fluid that circulates through the body, bringing nourishment and oxygen to all parts of the body.
Blood
Tubular, elastic, thick-walled branching vessels that carry oxygenated blood from the heart to all the tissues of the body.
Arteries
splits into the internal and external carotid arteries; supplies blood to the head, face and neck.
Common Carotid Artery (CCA)
bean shaped structures that filter out bacteria and viruses from the lymph fluid.
Lymph Nodes
Myocardium
AKA Red blood cells. Uses hemoglobin to transport oxygen. Hemoglobin attracts oxygen molecules.
Erythrocytes
Tubular, elastic, thin-walled branching vessels that carry deoxygenated blood from the capillaries in the tissues back to the heart and lungs for cleaning and to pick up oxygen.
Veins
Returns all blood from the head, face and neck to the heart.
Internal Jugular Vein
A colorless fluid, rich in WBC that attack bacteria in the blood.
Lymphatic Fluid
Thin inner lining.
Endocardium
AKA White blood cells. Fight bacteria and other foreign substances.
Leukocytes
Tiny, thin-walled vessels that connect the smaller arteries to venules.
Capillaries
Branch of the External Carotid Artery; supplies blood to the back of the head and up the crown.
Occipital Artery
Lymphocyte-rich tissue that makes up the spleen, thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils and adenoids.
Upper chambers (2) of the heart
atrium
AKA blood platelets. These are responsible for clotting of blood.
Thrombocytes
Part of the arteries that are smaller and deliver blood to capillaries.
Arterioles
Branch of the ECA; supplies blood to the scalp, above and behind the ears.
Posterior Auricular Artery
Thin tubes shaped like blood vessels that carry lymph fluids and WBC within the lymphatic system.
Lymphatic vessels
Lower chambers (2) of the heart.
Ventricle
Fluid part of blood which red and white blood cells and blood platelets are suspended.
Plasma
Small-diameter blood vessels that receive blood back from the capillaries.
Venules
Branch of ECA; branches into smaller arteries; supplies blood to sides and top of head
Superficial Temporal Artery
Between cells, these closed ended capillaries drain extracellular fluid.
