What is an Earthquake?

A sudden shaking of the Earth’s surface caused by movement of tectonic plates.

100

What is a volcano?

An opening in the Earth’s surface where magma, gas, and ash can escape.

100

What is a tsunami?

A series of large ocean waves caused by an underwater disturbance.

100

What room was our original classroom?

DC10

100

What two colours make purple?

Red and blue.

200

What do we call the point inside the Earth where an earthquake starts?

The focus (hypocentre).

200

What is molten rock called when it is beneath the Earth’s surface?

Magma

200

What is the most common cause of a tsunami?

Underwater earthquakes.

200

How many lessons have we completed?

17 (one above or below will be accepted)

200

Which sport does the NRL belong to?

Rugby League.

300

What is the name of the point on the Earth’s surface directly above the focus?

The epicentre

300

What is molten rock called once it reaches the Earth’s surface?

Lava

300

Why do tsunami waves increase in height as they approach the shore?

As waves enter shallow water, they slow down and build up in height.

300

Mr Flannagan-Swan

300

What is the capital city of Australia?

Canberra

400

What type of plate boundary is most commonly associated with the largest and most powerful earthquakes?

Convergent (destructive) plate boundaries.

400

Name one hazard caused by volcanic eruptions.

Pyroclastic flows, ashfall, lava flows, or toxic gases. (any one)

400

Name two impacts of tsunamis on coastal communities.

Flooding, destruction of buildings, loss of life, displacement of people, contamination of water. (any two)

400

1957 (will accept 1950 or 1960)

400

In rugby league, how many players are on the field for one team at a time?

13 players.

500

Explain how the movement of tectonic plates causes earthquakes.

Tectonic plates move slowly but can become stuck due to friction. Stress builds up over time until it is suddenly released, causing the ground to shake as energy travels through the Earth as seismic waves.

500

Explain why volcanoes commonly form along tectonic plate boundaries.

Volcanoes form at plate boundaries because plates either move apart (allowing magma to rise) or collide (where one plate is subducted, melts, and forms magma), which then rises to the surface.

500

Explain how an underwater earthquake can generate a tsunami.

When an earthquake causes the seafloor to suddenly move up or down, it displaces a large volume of water, creating waves that travel across the ocean and grow in height near coastlines.

500

How long has Miss Barns been a teacher for?

3 years

500

What is one major global issue currently affecting many countries?

Climate change, rising cost of living, or conflict. (any one)
