refers to the spread of particular behaviours whereby individuals sacrifice personal interest for the collective
What is the difference between the environment on social media and on the news?
Social Media -> nature as a space for therapy (i.e. on a cliff with a backdrop of a sunrise doing yoga), spaces of privilege.
News Media -> has the demanding role of informing the public about policy and pressing issues, duelling efforts.
What's the difference between a community and a network?
Networks gravitate around the logic of the individual VS community prioritizing the collective. Our account showcases who we are, a website, our affiliations, and we can add our bios to promote who we are. In the online community, we are anonymous and our ideas are shared. You have a username but the priority is what you’re saying.

collective excitement that becomes emotionally unstable, and a mass beginning to form that is unresponsive and irresponsible

What is a "circular reaction?"
people reinforce behaviour because in this cyclical state, people mindlessly mimic other’s thoughts. Crowd members then become as violent and impaulsive as the group’s most violent member.

He argues that we tend to respond to risk close to us spatially and temporally. When something is long-term or distant, then we are less likely to do anything about it.

Sense of Space -> on some level, all communities share a given space (it could be a physical or digital space), Shared Practice -> there is a behaviour, activity, or lingo that marks insider/outsider status, Shared Resources and Support -> a particular series of ideas about how members create social bonds with one another, Shared Identities -> individuals within the group share a particular part of their identity (could be interest-based or preexisting, Interpersonal Relationships -> the group is about feeling connected and forming relationships with one another
Who wins in a public cancellation?
Nobody besides the social media platform they are cancelled on! They get free promotion, and in some cases, so do the celebrities. They are already popular, and sometimes not even a cancellation can make them less famous.
