Jack paints his face, and it is symbolic because he is hiding his true self behind his mask. With a mask, he can be his own true evil self.

There is no hope left for the boys. The light is symbolic of hope and the fact that the boys have none left is represented in the fact that the island is covered in darkness now.

A story that has a literal meaning and a more metaphorical meaning. LOTF is a literal story about boys stranded on an island, but a metaphor for civilization.
