Write 10 x 10 as a power

102

100

Write out as multiplication: 42

4 x 4 = 16

100

You are given the expression: 4 + 2 x 3. Which step do you do first?

Multiplication!

100

Evaluate the expression: 4 x 2 + 1

4 x 2 + 1= 8 + 1 = 9

100

Evaluate the expression: (32 - 2) x 4 + 2

(32 - 2) x 4 + 2 = (9 - 2) x 4 + 2 = 7 x 4 + 2 = 28 + 2 = 30

200
Write 3 x 3 as a power

32

200

Write as a power and solve: 82

8 x 8 = 64

200

You are given the expression 32 x 2. What step do you do first?

The exponent!

200

Evaluate the expression: 22 + 4

22 + 4 = 2 x 2 + 4 = 4 + 4 = 8

200

Evaluate the expression: (6 + 2) x 15 + 4

(6 + 2) x 15 + 4 = 8 x 15 + 4 = 8 x 1 + 4 = 8 + 4= 12

300

Write as a power: 2 x 2 x 2 x 2

24

300

Write out as multiplication and solve: 23

2 x 2 x 2 = 4 x 2 = 8

300

You are given the expression (4+2) x 3. What step do you do first?

Addition!

300

Evaluate the expression: 5 - 1 + 3

5 - 1 + 3 = 4 + 3 = 7

300

Evaluate the expression: 6 + 24 - 1

6 + 24 - 1 = 6 + 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 - 1 = 6 + 4 x 4 - 1 = 6 + 16 - 1 = 22 - 1 = 22

400

Write as a power: 100 x 100 x 100

1003

400

Write out as multiplication and evaluate: 33

3 x 3 x 3 = 9 x 3 = 27

400

You are given the expression 4 / 2 x 3. What step do you do first?

/ Means division

Division!

400

Evaluate the expression: 4 x 32 + 9 - 5

4 x 32 + 9 - 5 = 4 x 9 + 9 - 5 = 36 + 9 - 5 = 45 - 5 = 40

400

Evaluate the expression: 16 + (52 - 7) / 3

/ means division

16 + (52 - 7) / 3 = 16 + (25 - 7) / 3 = 16 + 18 / 3 = 16 + 6 = 22

500

Write as a power: 2.5 x 2.5

2.52

500

Write out as multiplication and solve: 16

1 x 1 x 1 x 1 x 1 x 1 = 1

You and a friend are working on the same math problem. You are asked to evaluate the expression 32 + 12 / (6-3) x 8. Your friend says to do the exponent first. Is your friend correct? Why or why not?

Your friend is wrong! You do subtraction first because it is in the parentheses.

500

Evaluate the expression: 4 + 2 x 52

4 + 2 x 5= 4 + 2 x 25 = 4 + 50 = 54

500

You and two friends, Frodo and Sam, are doing the same math homework. Frodo and Sam have a question for you. When they evaluated 42 / (15 - 23), they each got a different answer. Looking at their steps and doing it yourself, who was right? Frodo or Sam?

Frodo: 42 / (15 - 23) = 42 / (15 - 2 x 3) = 42 / (15 - 6) = 42 / 9 = 4 and 6/9

Sam: 42 / (15 - 2 x 2 x 2) = 42 / (15 - 8) = 42 / 7 = 6

Sam is correct! An exponent is the big number times itself, not the big number times the little number.
