What is a benchmark?

a permanent object of known elevation used to measure other elevations

100

What does the subfloor sit on (and what is it fastened to)?

Floor joists

100

What is a Floor Plan?

shows the building layout and serves as a reference for making many other types of drawings, details, and schedules.

100

Why are shingles installed from the bottom up?

So courses properly lap each other to provide waterproofing.

100

What is 3/8" + 3/8"?

3/4"

200

What is an easement?

an area of land marked for use and maintenance of utilities

200

What is a header in wall framing?

A structural element used to carry & distribute the load around an opening (such as for a door or window).

200

What is a “Section” on an architectural drawing?

a view representing a “cut” through the building to clarify construction of a particular item, such as a wall or roof.

200

How many nails should be in a full width (non-cut) shingle?

4

200

What is 5/16" + 3/4"?

1 1/16"

300

What is a setback?

The minimum distance between the building and property lines.

300

What is a sill plate?

a board (sitting flat) attached to the top surface of the foundation wall.

300

What is a "Detail"?

shows a small portion of the building to clarify the materials and type of construction used. A detail is typically a larger, more detailed drawing of a smaller section of the build.

300

Why is there a tar strip on the shingles, and should it be exposed?

The tar strip exists so that (once heated by the sun) each course of shingle will stick to the one above & below it, which helps with waterproofing and wind uplift resistance.

the tar strip should NOT be exposed, and should be covered by the course above it.

300

What is 3 1/2" + 6 3/16"?

9 11/16"

400

What is zoning?

A system of classifying the use and development of land. Zoning divides land into zones for specific uses and restricts what types of structures can be built.

400

What is a jack stud?

A stud next to the king studs and below the header. A jack stud extends from the sole plate to the bottom of the header. It is attached to both the king stud and to the header.

400

What is an "Elevation"?

shows an exterior view of a building or an interior view, such as a kitchen or hospital cabinet layout. Also called a "rendering", it's a drawing of the actual finished build rather than just the plans.

400

Why should you measure the width of the roof before starting your shingle installation?

To check for square, and to see how many shingles will fit on the roof (you may have to start with less than a full shingle to ensure you don't end up with a tiny strip at the end).

400

What is 11 7/8" - 8 15/16"?

2 15/16"

500

When reading contour lines, what does tighter, closer lines represent? What do looser, farther lines represent?

closer, tighter lines = steep incline

looser, farther lines = lower, more gradual incline

500

What is blocking?

Pieces of wood used to provide structural support and to prevent the spread of fire from floor-to-floor through stud spaces.

Explain how scale sizing relates to building size.

Scale sizing uses smaller measurements (such as eights, or quarters of an inch) to represent actual sizing (such as feet) of a building.

For example, 1/4" = 1' 0" would mean that every quarter inch on the page represents one full foot of the actual construction.
500

Once a line is snapped for your first course of shingles, how do you ensure you keep the rest of your courses straight (parallel) as you go up the roof?

Every course needs to be installed with the appropriate amount of reveal to ensure straight courses.

500

What is 144 1/8" + 256 9/16"?

400 11/16"
