Who are the mandated reporters within our program?

Every employee in HS/EHS is a mandated reporter.

 Anyone who suspects child abuse or neglect of any of our students is required by law to report it. There does not have to be actual proof. An investigation will occur to determine the certainty.

What is the targeted goal of attendance for every child in HS/EHS laid out by our Performance Standards?

85% - Children need to be in school in order to benefit from our full array of educational and health services. The work we do in HS/EHS helps to prepare them for their entry into kindergarten when they leave our program. It is called 'school readiness.'

How are bottle fed babies expected to be fed?

They need to be held. 

Babies should not be placed in a crib or on the floor during feeding. The human touch is essential for the healthy development of a baby.

Trainings occur every year during our pre-service. What are 3 trainings that employees receive annually during this time?

There are many: CARS; CPR; Mandated Reporting; Fire Safety; Food Serve; Basic Health, Nutrition, & Safety; COS; Conscious Discipline; Civics.

What does CLASS refer to within our program?

It is a scoring tool that is used by an observer. There are 3 domains and 10 dimensions within the CLASS tool. The observer records evidence of them.

What is the Family Partnership Agreement?

An agreement that develops and implements family goals & shared strategies to meet them.

When should the meal count be taken? 

At the point of service.

The meal count should be done immediately when the meal is being served.

How many learning objectives are there within TSG?

38 - Teachers need to observe the children to watch for evidence of them. Documentation of the observations are collected into the TSG system. Teachers use this information to guide their next teaching steps and report it to parents. Documentation of child behaviors should be done every day. All teachers should enter observations.

What is the IPDP?

Individual Professional Development Plan.

All employees should set goals for new learning every year. This written plan should include strategies to help achieve the goals.

Why are teachers expected to eat with the children?

Teachers serve as role models.

Teachers should take a serving of every food staple provided. Teachers should encourage children to TASTE everything, but never force children to eat. A credible balanced diet is provided. Children are exposed to new foods and will eventually learn to appreciate them as they grow.

How often are parent meetings supposed to be held? What is the purpose?

The PS state that parent meetings should be held every month. The purpose of the meetings is to build partnerships with parents, share curriculum and give parents an opportunity for input, and work to align home/school goals & activities that will benefit the children.

Under what conditions are you allowed to send a child home when sick? 

General rule: Fever of 100.4 and child may show additional signs of illness (fussy, lethargic, runny nose). If the child is taking too much of a teacher's time preventing her/him from tending to all children, this should be considered. You must consult with your EPM or health staff prior to sending any child home.

A 'team lead' is expected to hold what degree AND should have what level of personal attendance? 

An AA (Associate of Arts) degree and 90% attendance. 

Leech Lake Tribal College offers the AA degree in Early Childhood for those who want to make a career in this field of teaching.

Drawing children's attention to the sounds of language is known as what?

Phonemic Awareness (This falls under the broader heading of Phonological Awareness).

What is the process for checking on student absences? 

Teacher contacts family 1st hour to check. It should be documented. If after 2 days of no contact from family, FCP staff will attempt to contact family. After 5 consecutive days of child's absence and no contact from family, a letter is sent with a date to contact or child's spot will be vacated.

How do we ensure that children with allergies are kept safe? 

Be aware of the type of allergy and the reactions that can occur. Have written documentation on it along with any medical instructions. Have a COS classroom plan ready including instructions in a substitute folder. Know who is assigned to what task when putting a plan in motion.

What is the 'critical period' of a child's development?

The critical period is the span between birth up to the age of 3! 

The brain is developing at high speed and that development is dependent upon experiences, the environment, and relationships that are built. WHAT WE DO WITH & FOR CHILDREN MATTERS!
