what is biotic
living thinks that live here
What is a ecosystem
A place where living things interact with
other living things and non-living things
Species - Living things of the same kind that are able to reproduce
what is a population
Population - The number of individuals from the same
species that live together in the same area
what is a community
Community-All the populations of different species that
live and interact in the same place
Bioaccumulation
Is the gradual build up of a
pollutant/toxin in an individual
living organism over a period of
time.
Ex. Each time a predator eats
their prey more and more toxins
are building up in that
individuals' bodies
what is a abtioic
abiotic is things that are dead
What do you need to survive
Water, Food , Oxygen,Energy, Suitable life conditions
what is a species
Species
Living things that are able to reproduce with each other and create an offspring
what is a pouplation
Population A group of the same species that live in the same area
what is the difference between biodegrade and non-biodegradable
Biodegradable &
Non-biodegradable Substances
Biodegrtable
Substances that have the ability to be
broken down naturally in the environment
are biodegradable.
Ex. plant matter or items in your compost
bin
Non-biodegradable substances either cannot
be broken down naturally, or take an
extremely long time to break down.
Ex. Some plastics
Non-biodegradable Substances
When non-biodegradable
pollutants enter an ecosystem
they will remain there forever.
Ex) pesticides, mercury, glass
what is a pollutant
Pollutants become toxins when
they affect living organisms
what is a adaption
Adaption - When an organism changes to ensure it is best suited to survive
what is a community
Community
Different populations that live and interact in the same place
what is the difference between a consumer and a producer
?????????/
what is succession
Succession
Ecosystems change, one major way that
an ecosystem changes and re-grows is
called succession.
Primary succession - Happens in areas where no life
lives or thrives because of no
soil. No life existed here
before
Secondary succession - When human activities or a
natural disaster destroys a
community or ecosystem
Climax Community-When an ecosystem has a
large diversity of species that
thrive but continues to change
as needed.
- The final stage of succession,
remaining relatively
unchanged until destroyed by
an event (such as a fire)
Sustainability is:
An ecosystem that is not affected by
the outside influences, it stays
constant.
what does bio magnification mean ?
Biomagnification
Is the gradual build up of a
pollutant/toxin in organisms within
a food web, over a period of time.
The toxins increase between
organisms at different levels of their
food web.
Ex. When a toxic shrimp is eaten by
a toxic fish who is then eaten
Biomass
what is matter
What is Matter? Matter is everything around you. Atoms and compounds are matter that go on to build things you see and touch every day. Matter is neither created nor destroyed. It is recycled. This means that what is here on Earth has been here for millions of years and will continue to be here. Rather than disappearing, it recycles itself.
what is the difference between a food chain and a food web
90
what is the difference between prey and predator
Predator- An organism that hunts and kills another organism for food
Prey - The organism that is hunted by the predator
what is the difference between a food chain and a food web
Food Chain - Pathway energy flows from 1 living thing to another in an ecosystem
Food web-A complex combination of 2 or more food chains
what is a food pyramid
Food pyramid - Takes the food chain but uses it to show how energy moves through a community
what are types of things in a ecosytem and things that eat serten things
Producer-An organism that makes its own food
Consumer.- An organism that needs to eat another organism to get energy
Decomposer-An organism that break down dead matter dead biotic things into dirt/soil
Herbivore - An organism that eats plants
Carnivore-An organism that eats meat
Obligate carnivore: has to eat meat
Omnivore-An organism that eats plants and meat
Scavenger-An organism that eats dead or someone else’s leftovers
Piscivore- An organism that eats fish
Insectivore-An organism that eats insects
How does Weather affect
Predator-Prey relationships?
• HUGE! If the weather is bad such as
a bad winter the prey could be
hibernating therefore no food!
• Natural disasters (flood, drought,
earthquakes, lightning)
what is the carbon cycle and the water cycle
The two main cycles that we will be
looking at are the water cycle and carbon
cycle.
Cycle-Circulation or recycling of matter in nature
Water Cycle-The recycling of water in
nature.
All the water we have on
earth has always been here,
and is constantly recycled.
Carbon cycle-The recycling of carbon in
nature.
All living things are made of carbon. Plants
use carbon dioxide and sunlight to make
their food and grow (photosynthesis). The
Carbon becomes a part of the plant.
Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas and
traps heat in the atmosphere. Without
greenhouse gasses, the Earth would freeze.
But humans have burned so much that the
Earth is becoming a warmer place..
