When do we use a colon ? 

1. Use a colon at the end of a complete statement to introduce a summary, restatement, or explanation of the ideas presented in the preceding independent clause.

When do we use semicolon ?

  1. Use a semicolon to join independent clauses not joined by a coordinating conjunction (and, but, so, for, yet, nor, or).
    Example: Some students do more than attend college; they have families and jobs that compete for their time as well.
  2. Use a semicolon to join independent clauses joined by a conjunctive adverb (however, therefore, moreover, etc.).
    Example: I needed more time to study for my classes; therefore, I cut back on the hours I worked each week.
  3. Use a semicolon to join independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction if one or both independent clauses contain distracting commas.
    Example: The Center for Academic Success offers peer tutoring for almost every subject; but if you need help with your writing, you should visit the Writing Center, conveniently located in the CAS.
  4. Use a semicolon to separate list items when the individual items in the series contain commas.

When do we use commas?

1. Use a comma before a coordinating conjunction (and, but, yet, so, or nor, for) when it joins two complete ideas (independent clauses).

EX. He walked down the street, and then he turned the corner.

2. Use a comma after an introductory clause or phrase. A comma tells readers that the introductory clause or phrase has come to a close and that the main part of the sentence is about to begin.

ex. When Evan was ready to iron, his cat tripped on the cord.

3. Use a comma to separate each item in a series; a series is a group of three or more items having the same function and form in a sentence.

ex.We bought apples, peaches, and bananas today.

4. An appositive is a noun or noun phrase that renames a nearby noun. Appositives offer nonessential information. Nonrestrictive appositives are set off with commas; restrictive appositives are not.

ex.Alexander Pope, the Restoration poet, is famous for his monologues. (appositive)

5.Direct address is indicated by the use of a comma or commas, depending upon its placement within the sentence.

ex.I think, John, you’re wrong.

6. A dialogue is a conversation between two or more people. 

ex. Mary said, “I dislike concerts because the music is too loud.”

7. In dates, the year is set off from the rest of the sentence with a pair of commas. Example:

ex. On December 12, 1890, orders were sent out for the arrest of Sitting Bull.
