Angiography, Angiogram,  Angioplasty

"What is"

Angiography: A Diagnostic test that uses X-Ray to produce an image blood vessels

Angiogram:

  • insertion of a catheter into an artery located in the arm, upper thigh, or groin (Femoral Artery is the most common insertion point.)
  • inject contrast dye into the catheter
  • take X-rays of the blood vessels to identify blockages.

Angioplasty:

A procedure using a balloon to stretch and open a narrowed or blocked artery.

Sterile Field

What is...Techniques and procedures that are followed to prevent the spread of microorganisms.

The front of the sterile gown is sterile between the shoulders and the waist, and from the sleeves to two inches below the elbow.

100

Radiolucent

What is - Transparent to X-RAY

100

Percutaneous

What is..below the skin surface.

Needles for drawing blood or catheters puncture vessels percutaneously.

100

ALARA

what is...“as low as reasonably achievable”

200

TEE

Transesophageal echocardiography- often takes place in the Cath Lab- takes approx. 20-40 min.

A test that provides a highly detailed image of the heart.

High Dose Radiation procedure

200

Circulator

What is the... A person who acts as the patient advocate while they are under anesthesia.  They provide nursing care from assessment to outcome evaluation. The circulating nurse works by collaborating with other members of the team including the anesthesiologist, surgeon, surgical technologist, surgical assistant, and other personnel.

200

Eye Changes with Radiation exposure?

What is ....Early Cataract Formation

200

Interventional Radiology procedures

  • Angioplasty- repair or unblocking of blood vessels.
  • Stenting- small mesh tubes that treat narrow or weak arteries.
  • Thrombolysis- dissolving blood clots.
  • Embolization- block blood flow to cancer cells.
  • Radiofrequency ablation- used to reduce nerve pain.
  • Biopsies- study of tissues

CT definition

Computed Tomography

A computerized tomography (CT) scan combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles around your body and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images (slices) of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside your body. CT scan images provide more-detailed information than plain X-rays do.

300

TAVR

What is ...a minimally invasive procedure that involves replacing the aortic valve in people with aortic stenosis.  Takes about an hour

300

Features of Xenolite 800 that make it superior.

Made of lighter attenuation materials- Antimony and Tugsten.

Elastomers and Polymers increase Elasticity and Strength

PVC - FREE

300

Deterministic Effects

What is....documented in the fields of interventional radiology, cardiology, and radiation treatment include radiation-induced thyroiditis, dermatitis, and hair loss. deterministic effects are determined by the cumulative amount of radiation exposure an organ or tissue experiences over time.

300

Fluoroscopy

What is...  A continuous X-ray beam is passed through the body part being examined. The beam is transmitted to a TV-like monitor so that the body part and its motion can be seen in detail.

Examples of procedures that use fluoroscopy include:

  • Barium X-rays and enemas (to view the gastrointestinal tract)
  • Cardiac catheterization (to make images of your heart and coronary arteries)
  • Arthrography (to visualize a joint or joints)
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Placement of intravenous (IV) catheters
300

Decubitus Ulcer

Bed Sores, Pressure ulcers-

Soft tissue injuries that form because of constant or prolonged pressure exerted on the skin.

400

Electrophysiology

What is...the study of the electrical activity of the heart
400

"Scrubbed"

What is...Once a surgeon, tech, or nurse is “scrubbed in” (hands washed, PPE donned), then they are part of the sterile environment.

400

Artifact

What is...something that shows on an X-Ray image that distorts or disrupts the image being viewed.

Commonly heard in reference to a positioning sponge or edges of the positioner.

400

Contrast

what is ....an Iodine based dye used in CT and Angiogram procedures to enhance X-Rays and Fluoroscopic view of Arteries - Helps diagnose coronary artery obstructions.

400

JCAHO

What is....Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations

Their mission is to continuously improve Healthcare

500

Stent

Cath Lab procedure - Use a Catheter to place a sheeth in a blood vessel in order to keep a clogged blood vessel open.

Access way can be either through the Femoral Artery or Radial Artery

500

Hybrid Room

What is....An advanced procedural space that combines traditional OR with Image guided Interventional suite.

500

Machines that emit Ionizing Radiation

X-Ray machine, C-ARMS, CT machines
