What are the responsibilities of a Tribal Historic Preservation Officer?

A Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) is a person designated by a federally-recognized Indian tribe to direct a program approved by the National Park Service. A THPO has the responsibilities of State Historic Preservation Officers on Tribal lands. A THPO also advises and works with federal agencies on the management of Tribal historic properties. A THPO also preserves and rejuvenates the unique cultural traditions, practices, and languages of their Tribal communities.
