  • Sojourner Truth was born Isabella Baumfree (also spelled Bomefree) in 1797 on the Colonel Johannes Hardenbergh estate in Swartekill, in Ulster County a Dutch settlement in upstate New York. 

  • Truth was one of the first most passionate female abolitionists for herself had once been a slave.
